Reaction sequence of the gas phase polymerization of ethene in the high pressure process
The polymerization of ethene in the high pressure process to LDPE is a radical polymerization.

- Illustration of the reaction steps in the formation of LDPE (low density polyethylene)
Backbiting means that the radical removes a hydrogen atom from the fifth, sixth or seventh methylene group of the radical polymer. The resulting radical leads to branched polymers (short-chain branching).
